Obituary of Chesley Willcott

Please share a memory of Chesley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Chesley Willcott of St. Alban’s, NL passed away peacefully at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre at the age of 96. Ches was predeceased by his wife Mollie (Collier) Willcott, parents Philip and Clara Willcott, sister Irene Hoskins (George), sister Teresa MacDonald (Gus) and brother Gerald Willcott (Beatrice) as well as special friend Mary Collier. He leaves with fond and loving memories his sister-in-law Mildred Trainor as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and other relatives and friends. Ches was an intelligent, inquisitive man who enjoyed learning to the end. From various books and magazines, Ches learned about the world. He could quickly tell you where countries were located in the Middle East, Africa, or anywhere else on the planet. This love of learning inspired him to enroll in a photography course in his late seventies, and to get a laptop computer and join Facebook in his eighties. Ches was also a walking history book of Bay D’Espoir. He could relate family histories and tales of many of the clans. With his passing, much of our local history has been lost. Ches was known for his work with his dump truck and tractor. He worked on town water lines and other projects. He also used his equipment to haul hardwood from the Nor’west Road. Ches loved music, especially the accordion. He also played the fiddle (as did his father), and the piano. Ches loved to dance and often spent a Saturday night dancing at the Royal Canadian Legion. He possessed a rich voice which he shared with the choir of St. Ignatius Parish in St. Alban’s as well as the choir at Twin Town Manor where he resided in later years. Religion played a major role in the life of Ches. He was a devout member of his church and participated in the many activities offered. A special thank you is extended to the staff of Twin Town Manor, and to the nurses and doctors of the Central Newfoundland Hospital who took such good care of him. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no formal funeral service. A private burial will take place. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please call a neighbour or friend who may need company.
